In Car Karaoke Experience

As a core team member for the Lynk&Co 900 (a 6-seater family SUV), I headed the end-to-end design of the In-Car Karaoke Experience—a key pillar of the vehicle's entertainment ecosystem.

THE SNAPSHOT

The Challenge:

Transform the Lynk&Co 900 into a premier family "Travel Space" by leveraging the Rear Rows. The goal was to create a deeply engaging, kid-oriented entertainment experience for 2nd and 3rd-row passengers that felt like premium.

The Solution:

I led the end-to-end design of a holistic Karaoke Ecosystem. By integrating hardware, software, and cabin environment, we turned the SUV into a social sanctuary where the vehicle itself becomes a stage, reacting to the user’s performance in real-time.

Key Deliverables:

I designed a Multi-functional Smart Microphone that acts as the primary bridge between the user and the car:

Smart Microphone: For an authentic karaoke feel.

Remote Control: A physical controller for the RSD, allowing seamless UI navigation from any seat.

Atmosphere Trigger: A "Magic Wand" feature using motion sensors to manipulate in-cabin ambient lighting and effects.

Outcome:

I owned the process from initial conceptualization to hardware 3D modeling and mid-fidelity prototyping. The project was highly acclaimed by stakeholders for its innovative fusion of hardware and HMI.

BRIEF

Our objective was to transform the vehicle from a simple commuter into an engaging "travel space." Key pillars included:

  • Family-Centric: Fun, engaging, and kid-oriented.
  • Dynamic: Focused on movement, high-fidelity sound, and social interaction.
  • Versatile: Designed for diverse users and multi-purpose scenarios.

WORKSHOP

I facilitated cross-functional workshops with HMI department leads to ideate on "The Future of In-Car Joy." Through a collaborative voting process, the In-Car Karaoke Experience emerged as the top priority, specifically targeting the high demand for family entertainment in the Chinese market.

RESEARCH

Market Opportunity: With over 100,000 KTV bars in China, Karaoke is a cultural staple, yet automotive integration remained basic.

Key Insight: Users value the "Private Room" (KTV) atmosphere. Glitzy, playful, rich, exclusive atmosphere is what they ask. This can be a good opportunity point to create a good KTV experience within the car.

The Gap: Current in-car solutions lack holistic integration; they feel like apps rather than experiences.

HMW design a standalone, holistic Karaoke ecosystem that blends playfulness, uniquness to create a premium social "sanctuary" for the Chinese community?

IDEATION

Research and Design process led me figure out that a Karaoke experience is not only holding a mic. and singing. Holistic In-car Karaoke ecosystem requires the 3 pillars of above to build an immersive experience.

1 - SING:

Adaptive cabin ambient lighting and high-fidelity audio transform the cabin into a glitzy stage.

2 - CAPTURE:

Integrated cabin cameras automatically record performances, creating instant "memories."

3 - SHARE:

Seamless "one-tap" sharing to social platforms and the Lynk&Co community to drive brand engagement.

MEET LYNX

The Primary Touchpoint is a Karaoke Microphone, called LynX, plays a crucial role in bridging the physical and digital.

USER FLOW

1 - SEAMLESS INTERACTION

In a family car context, the RSD is a primary interaction surface. Lifting LynX from its charging dock directly triggers RSD activation.

2 - REMOTE CONTROLLER

LynX acts as a pointer controller for RSD interaction, complemented by a rotary-encoder switch pack for precise and fluid control.

3 - KARAOKE APP

Using the remote, the user launches the Karaoke app. During playback, LynX guides the user through haptic feedback and ambient lighting, signaling turns and reinforcing musical cues for a seamless experience.

4 - MAGIC WAND

A rear light button on the microphone enables ambient light control, transforming the cabin into a glitzy, playful, and immersive experience space.

Push Light & Raise/Lower LynX

It changes the intensity of light.

Push Light & Wave LynX

It changes the color of the light.

DESIGN PROCESS

To reach to ideal solution, I followed a set of processes like low-fi exploration, User Journey, Prototyping etc.

WORKSHOP

After research, I organized a HMW session that would help me to establish the concept better. According to this session, main ideas were clustered as:

- Multifunctionality

- A community based activity

- Smartness of the Microphone

- Storage & charging
